Hi, I'm Donna and I've always loved creating. Whether it's sketching an illustration, writing a short story, working on mixed media artwork, or digital art, I enjoy doing it all.. I got into 3D art when I wanted to create my own models for my artwork. I started with Daz Studio back in 2012, then Poser. I work now with both Poser 10 and Daz Studio 4.9, Photoshop CC 2015.5, and sometimes Painter X3.

On a side note: I was known formerly here on as OddMuse, having this account solely for my anime and toon artwork. However, for reasons unknown, my OddMuse account seems to be broken. Choosing a canvas size is one of those horrible math-filled topics that are terrifying and mysterious the first time you try and do digital art, or start considering printing your art. It is important to make sure that you do not start with a canvas that is too small because you cannot make it larger later without losing quality. But what is “too small”? How large can you go? This comprehensive guide should help you jump into the confusing world of pixels, printing and canvas size guesstimates. You don’t need to understand it all, but it’s a good idea to understand it a little!

The desktop versions have unlimited canvas sizes, limited only by your computer memory. The mobile apps have capped sizes, due to the limited memory (RAM) in phones and tablets.

Pixels are the units of the internet. Every image on your screen is made up out of many, many little pixel dots, and this is what you are‘painting’ with.

Digital Art Photoshop Tools

Every digital image contains a specific number of pixels, and the size of your canvas is literally just picking how many pixels you want to start with. The bigger your image, the more detail you can add, and the larger you can print. However, you don’t actually need a very large canvas size if you just want to share your work online. However, the bigger your image, the more memory it uses and the slower things might get (this is why the mobile apps have capped canvas sizes).

Print size is an estimate based on your pixel size (the ‘real’ size of the image) and the ‘Pixels/Inch’ measurement (also known as DPI/PPI), which tells the printer how detailed the final image should be. But you don’t need to worry about that unless you are trying to get a really specific printing result.

The pixel size is the‘real’ size of your file, so we highly, highly recommend getting used to what the numbers mean. A 5000 x 10, 000 pixel canvas (which is large for most purposes) may be muchhigher than you need, or it may be just right.

Calculating the ‘perfect’ print size is a topic that tends to cause a lot of argument amongst ‘real’ artists (and photographers), for whom it is very important to get exactly the right result, but the easiest way to estimate the size for now is to switch over to the ‘Print Size’ tab in the canvas size screen (see picture).

Once you know what pixel size you like working at, you can ignore the‘Print Size’ tab and the Pixels/Inch measurement entirely, and just set those when you go to actually print something.

DPI = dots per inch, or how many ink drops. PPI = pixels per inch. These days they’re essentially the same thing and used interchangeably.

72 is‘screen resolution’ and generally not great. 450 is super high quality overkill that most printers can’t even manage. 150-300 is a good range for art printing.

The‘recommended’ DPI/PPI amount is usually set by a) photographers or b) Very Serious Artists. These people needvery, very high pixels per inch because photographs do not look good when slightly fuzzy and Serious Artists will be printing out very high quality images on expensive paper and needing to consider everything down to the type of ink.

You probably do not need that. You can probably get away with 100 pixels per inch. The only times you need to worry a lotabout the exact pixels per inch is if you:

If you’re not sure what ‘too low but only slightly’ will look like in real life, pick up some random printed pictures or leaflets, hold them up to your nose and try and see if you can actually see any pixels. The cheaper the printing, the more likely you are to see low quality graphics! Then hold it at arms length and have another look – you’ll often find that the pixelated images look fine if you aren’t rubbing your nose on them, so you have a lot more leeway when creating very large posters.

Or just randomly print out some test images on computer paper. Your home printer will almost always use 72 DPI, so it’s very easy for you to see if that’s usable or not.

Complicated because every screen is different and websites will display everything differently, but most of the time, the actual size you need will be far, far smaller than the size you need for printing, so you’ll rarely run into quality issues. This can mean that problems won’t show up until you go to print!

Your screen resolution is somewhere between 600 and 1920 pixels across. That’s smallerthan the maximum canvas size in our mobile apps (which is 2048×2048 pixels). So you could easily create a screen size canvas using the ‘Use Window Size’ button and not really worry about the quality or size.

Facebook and other social media sites tend to shrink pictures to a standard size that are easy to browse, but aren’t always the best size for sharing fullsize, detailed, art. Facebook shrinks images to around 900 pixels wide, so as long as your images are bigger than that, they will always be full size – for Facebook! – when you upload them.

Each time I started a new digital painting, I used to basically guess at what size the canvas should be. Sometimes it would work out fine, but other times it would lead me into frustrating issues with the painting further down the road.

I did a lot of research into what canvas size and resolution I should use for a whole bunch of different purposes, and I rarely run into issues any more.  

If you just want to show it on the internet and on social media, a good canvas size for digital art is a minimum of 2000 pixels on the long side, and 1200 pixels on the short side.

If you want to print your digital art, your canvas should be a minimum of 3300 by 2550 pixels.  A canvas size of more than 6000 pixels on the long side isn’t usually needed, unless you want to print it poster-sized.

This is obviously simplified a lot, but it works as a general rule.  Read on for an explanation of these numbers, why you don’t want to get your canvas size wrong, and an in-depth list of the standard canvas sizes for multiple different purposes.

I’m going to have to start off by explaining a few terms, so that the numbers I share later make sense to everyone.

In the softwares used for digital painting, the painting area is typically known as the canvas.  The canvas’ size is measured in pixels.

PPI (pixels per inch) is how many pixels are in 1 inch when viewed on a screen, so on a monitor of 150PPI, a canvas that’s 300 pixels tall and 300 wide will appear to be 2 inches tall.  

DPI (dots per inch) is similar, but it's how many ‘pixels’ are in 1 inch when printed.  That same canvas of 300x300 would print out as 1 inch tall and wide when printed at 300DPI.

Interchangeably, so someone may use DPI when speaking of viewing the image on a screen, or PPI when talking about printing, which can be a little confusing.  

A lot of software will also use the term DPI when setting up your canvas size, even if you don’t plan on printing it.

A few problems can emerge if you don’t pay attention to your canvas size, both during the painting process and afterward.  These can be separated into 2 situations, either having a canvas that is too small, or one that’s too big:

A smaller canvas means your software will run smoother.  The issues of a canvas size too small come after finishing the painting; either in viewing or printing the image at full size.

If you made the art too small, you’ll either have to print/view the art smaller than you’d like, or scale it up and get blurring or artifacts.

Obviously this just makes the art look worse, and could render the art useless for commercial use and have to be repainted.

A bigger canvas means you’ll be able to do more things with it once it’s finished.  The consequences of your canvas size being too big are all during painting.  

If your system can't handle the canvas size, your brushstrokes will be applied slower, tools will be slower to use, filters will take longer to calculate, saving will take longer, the list goes on.

A slower running system will frustrate and slow down the entire process, as well as increasing the risk of your software or system crashing.

Standard Canvas sizes for multiple purposesThe key to avoiding issues is to plan what you'll use the art for:If your art is going to be shown online:

Desktop or Phone wallpapers: 1920x1080 pixels will suffice, or you can go up to 2560 x 1440 pixels if you want to be safe

And since a small canvas can't be used for many things after finishing, you want to be able to make a larger finished painting.

The Best Canvas Size And Resolution For Digital Art

In order to be able to both have your cake and eat it too, I recommend the following process when you start a painting:

Start off as big as you can without slowing down your computer/tablet - increase the size of your art as much as you can as you start zooming in to do details

Look through the list of canvas sizes above, and figure out the largest canvas you might want when the painting is finished.  If you decide you might want to make a poster, that means a final goal canvas size of 7200 x 10800 pixels.

Start your painting at this final target size, and see how well your system responds.  If it’s sluggish, downsize it a bit.  Keep downsizing until you are happy with how responsive your software is.

The start of the painting is when you’ll probably be making the largest changes and using the biggest brushstrokes, but as soon as you start making smaller changes and using a smaller brush size, increase the canvas size.  Increase it up as far as you can before the software gets sluggish.

Each time you find yourself getting further into the painting and using a smaller brush up the canvas size until you hit your goal, .  You should be able to get to your target size, while enjoying a smooth painting experience along the way.

If you try this method and aren’t able to hit the final goal size by the end of the painting, you may need to come to terms with the fact that either you need to lower your expectations for how smooth your software will run, or print your finished art smaller.

Alternatively, you could upgrade your hardware; nearly all digital art software depends on CPU and RAM to run smoothly, so if you decide to upgrade then I recommend focusing on CPU and RAM.

The desktop versions have unlimited canvas sizes, limited only by your computer memory. The mobile apps have capped sizes, due to the limited memory (RAM) in phones and tablets.

Pixels are the units of the internet. Every image on your screen is made up out of many, many little pixel dots, and this is what you are‘painting’ with.

Every digital image contains a specific number of pixels, and the size of your canvas is literally just picking how many pixels you want to start with. The bigger your image, the more detail you can add, and the larger you can print. However, you don’t actually need a very large canvas size if you just want to share your work online. However, the bigger your image, the more memory it uses and the slower things might get (this is why the mobile apps have capped canvas sizes).

Print size is an estimate based on your pixel size (the ‘real’ size of the image) and the ‘Pixels/Inch’ measurement (also known as DPI/PPI), which tells the printer how detailed the final image should be. But you don’t need to worry about that unless you are trying to get a really specific printing result.

Do you need to print it? Calculate the largest size and exact aspect ratio that you’ll need and use that so you don’t have to worry going forward.

WASHINGTON — Tens of millions of low-income families are set to lose additional food stamp benefits on Wednesday after the expiration of a pandemic-era policy that had increased the amount they received, leaving food banks bracing for a surge in demand and some advocates predicting a rise in hunger nationwide.

For nearly three years of the pandemic, emergency legislation enacted by Congress sought to cushion the economic blow of the coronavirus, allowing all participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to receive the maximum monthly benefit, regardless of income. The extra cash, along with other economic assistance programs, helped keep food insecurity at bay and cut poverty rates to a record low.

But that temporary increase lapses for more than 30 million people across 35 states and territories on Wednesday, effectively cutting benefits for the vast majority of recipients as inflation remains persistently high and many other coronavirus-era programs end.

“This is a cost shift from the federal government, ” said Ellen Vollinger, the SNAP director at the nonprofit Food Research & Action Center. “It just shifts the burden of hunger onto states and counties, to the charitable sector, but of course, most harshly, it shifts the burden to that household to try to make do with even less.”

Under the pandemic-era policy, each recipient got a monthly average of $251. That is expected to decline by about a third, or $82, in March, according to the Agriculture Department, which administers the food stamp program.

Those who qualify for the minimum benefit under the standard income guidelines — many of whom are older Americans relying on Social Security — will see the steepest decrease, from $281 in monthly benefits to only $23, according to Ms. Vollinger.

Even though the extra benefits will lapse, food stamp benefits will remain more generous than three years earlier, because the Biden administration permanently increased benefits by 25 percent over prepandemic levels.

Moreover, 10.5 percent of Americans reported being food insecure in 2019, the lowest rate since 2000. Food insecurity rates were not statistically different in the three years of the extra SNAP benefits, leading some to question their efficacy.

Angela Rachidi, a fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said she did not expect “the expiration to affect food insecurity rates much at all” and argued that warnings about a rise in hunger were exaggerated. She noted that in some states where the allotments had already ended, food insecurity rates appeared unchanged.

For some beneficiaries, the cuts may come as a surprise. The additional allotment is contingent upon both state and federal declarations of public health emergencies. But while the federal public health emergency will expire in May, the food stamp policy is ending two months earlier because of a deal Congress struck in December, leaving state governments and advocates to relay the changes.

Larechia Baldwin, 29, a single mother of a 5-year-old boy in Worcester, Mass., said she was worried about the end of the extra benefits. Her monthly allotment will decrease by over $100 in March, she estimated, the equivalent of losing a week’s worth of groceries. Adding to her financial headache, her monthly rent has increased by $200.

Already, Ms. Baldwin said food banks and pantries in her area were short on certain items. She expects to visit more frequently, but she said that navigating the hours and finding transportation would be an extra worry as she does not own a car and is recovering from a stroke.

To make ends meet, Ms. Baldwin will most likely forgo expensive favorites, Lunchables for her son and haddock fish for her. Even after tightening her budget, she anticipates running out of food by the end of the month.

The “hunger cliff” is imminent and the abrupt lapse in benefits will only exacerbate the situation, Ms. Vollinger said. “It is a very big problem, and it’s hitting pretty precipitously.”

The loss of benefits is coming as the cost of groceries, housing and energy is sharply increasing, said Vince Hall, the chief government relations officer at Feeding America, a network of 200 food banks. The result is a “perfect storm, ” he added. “Inflation is driving more people to need food banks, but inflation also makes it more difficult for food banks to meet that demand.”

A handful of food banks and pantries have struggled to keep up with demand, in some cases running out of food altogether, Mr. Hall said. That number is only expected to increase as the emergency allotments expire, setting the stage for what is almost certain to be a rise in hunger.

“The majority of families on SNAP have children, ” he said. “They have no clear pathway to solve for the termination of the emergency allotments. Children, senior citizens are not going to pick up extra hours at work or get a second job.”

The cuts are also likely to disproportionately affect vulnerable populations like Black and Latino families, older adults and the disabled, said Eric Mitchell, the president of the Alliance to End Hunger.

“A lot of folks, they’re not only worried about being able to put food on the table, but how they’re going to put food on the table, how they’re going to pay for rent, how to heat or cool their home, how to pay for child care, ” he said.

The pandemic-era policy has already ended in 18 states, where food banks and SNAP recipients have reported increased hardship and food insecurity.

In Georgia, where emergency allotments ended in May, the Atlanta Community Food Bank said it was distributing as much food today as it did during the height of the pandemic.

Currently, the organization is serving about 600, 000 people, or about one in every 10 residents in the Atlanta metro area. That is a 40 percent increase since 2021, according to Kyle Waide, the bank’s president and chief executive.

Cuts to SNAP benefits account for about half of the increase in demand, he said, attributing the rise to the end of other pandemic-era benefits, like the expanded child tax credit and universal free school meals.

The Atlanta food bank is currently spending about $2.5 million a month to buy food, more than it has ever spent since its founding in 1979, and tapping into reserve funds to cover the cost, Mr. Waide said.

“But that is not sustainable, ” he added. Absent an increase in food and funding directly distributed to food banks by the federal government, his organization is “only a few months away from being faced with having to make tough choices about how we can continue to purchase at this level.”

While in the popular imagination food stamps are a response to the urban poor, its roots are truly in farm country. According to economics professor Maurice MacDonald, the history of food stamps goes back to the Great Depression. The goal in the program’s early years wasn’t necessarily to feed America’s poor. The idea was to buttress the price of food after the decline in crop prices had created a crisis in rural America. Support for the program came both from farmers and the poor in isolated pockets of America, particularly the Mississippi Delta and Appalachia.
